LATEST NEWS Last updated: January 19, 2012 DISTRICT SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011 The 2011 District Schools Championships event was held at Rosebud Country Club on Monday 19th December. In beautiful weather conditions and on an extremely well prepared golf course a small but very keen field of young male and female golfers fought out an exciting battle.

PAST PRESIDENTS AND CAPTAINS DAY A fine day at Rosebud on December 5th saw a good field of players in the annual day for the former leaders of the clubs of the district. Thank you to Trish Wech and Sue Evans of Mornington who organised the day, together with the people at Rosebud who provided an excellent course and a tasty lunch. Individual winners were Innes Benson (Mornington) in the captains' group and Robyn Wilson for the presidents. The team competition for former captains was won by Devilbend whose team of Barb Alexander, Di Warden and Glenyse Addicoat is pictured below. The team of Robyn Wilson, Denise Hudd and Alison Jones from The Dunes won the former presidents' competition. . NTP winners were 4th Yvonne Howell (Mornington); 7th Sharyn Stephenson (The Dunes) ;12th Mary Reeves (Devilbend) and 14th Rhonda Harrison fromThe Dunes.

Alison and Denise (Alison and Denise are former MPDWG presidents) BEACON PLATE ENTRIES NOW OPEN One of the very popular events on the MPDWG program is the Beacon Plate, a 4BBB Stableford competition, to be held next year at Mornngton on February 23rd. Click the link BEACON PLATE 2012 for an entry form THE GRAND FINALE - THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS The winner of the Champion of Champions played at Sorrento on Monday November 28 was Sue Semmens from Moonah Links. The runner-up was Laura Griffin from Cardinia Beaconhills. B grade was won by Lyndsay Cliffe (The National) and C grade by Sandra Delves of Sorrento. Runners up were M. Batrouney (Sorrento - B grade) and Maureen Downie of Portsea in C grade.

The Hiscock Salver was played this year as a competition involving players from pennant or handicap matchplay teams, or those who had been caddies. The winning team with 140 pts was Cardinia Beaconhills. The players from L/R Jenny Chandler (20) 38pts, Kim Pitcher (35) 34pts, Libby Michell (22) 36pts, and Greta DeHoogd (26) 32pts. It was a beautiful day and the course was in terrific condition. OUR 2011 CHAMPIONS It was a great day at Sorrento for the semi-finals and finals of our MPDWG Championships. The winners were Michele Craigie from The National in A grade, Robyn Patrick (Portsea) B grade and and in C grade former MPDWG vice-president and long-time competitor Audrey Shepherd from Devilbend . Congratulations to them all and to those who competed with them.

Click FRIDAY MATCHPLAY DRAW for the timesheet MPDWG CHAMPIONSHIPS - FIRST ROUND Very strong winds were the main feature of the opening round of the 2011 Championships played at The National on Thursday September 22nd Congratulations to all the competitors and especially to the winners of the three divisions, Jenny Jeffreys from Portsea (A grade) , Sue Barlow (The Dunes) in B grade, and Michelle Sherman also from The Dunes in C grade.
The handicap winners were Meredith Ramadan from The National (A grade), Rhonda McAllister from The National (B grade) and Denise Williamson (Cape Schanck) - C grade. The top eight performers in each grade will go on to matchplay rounds, beginning at Moonah Links next Monday, September 25th. The semi-finals and finals wiill be at Sorrento. Also at Cardinia Beaconhills is the 2011 Ladies Open, a state ranking event for players with handicaps of 20 or less, on Sunday October 23rd, and their mixed Open Day on Wednesday 9th November. It has been said that the best way to improve your golf is to take it up 20 years earlier. DISTRICT FINAL OF THE ROYAL WOMEN'S HOSPITAL 4BBB The weather was perfect for the MPDWG final of the GolfVictoria fundraising event for the Royal Women's Hospital, played at Rosebud CGC on Monday August 22nd. The winners were Joan Lawson and Candy Ormerod from Flinders who scored 43 points , and they along with the runners-up, Susan Hyams and Ilse Troy from Mount Martha (41 points), will represent the district in the State Final at Metropolitan on September 16th. . VALE DOROTHY HARDIE
One of the Life Members of the MPDWG, Dorothy Hardie , died on the.27th of July. Mrs Hardie gave outstanding service toThe District Committee for 15 years: she was Secretary/Treasurer from 1979 to 1988, and President from 1989 to 1993. Representatives from the Executive attended her funeral along with a large number of her family and friends. A GOOD DAY Sixty-three participants, six professional coaches, sunny weather and the facilities of The National Golf Club made for a very successful Bettine Burgess Clinic on Thursday 28th July. With financial assistance from Golf Victoria the MPDWG committeee arranged this event, following the two very popular clincs held in 2010. All those present were enthusiastic in their appreciation of the help given by the coaches in small groups in the morning, followed by lunch in the clubhouse. Tim Stone from The National spoke about course management and the psychological aspects of the game, and Alison Jones talked about etiquette and rules. Thank you to the committee and everyone involved. There is a new link on the JOKES PAGE to a putting game that will I hope you find easier than I have. RWH 4BBB DISTRICT PLAYOFF Winners of the heats of this state-wide event from twelve MPDWG clubs will contest the final at Rosebud CC on Monday August 22nd. Click RWH 4BBB for the timesheet. The winners and the runners-up will go on to play at Metropolitan GC in the State Final on Friday 16th September. The event has been run for some years by Women's Golf Victoria, now part of Golf Victoria. It has raised many thousands of dollars for pelvic floor research at the Royal Women's Hospital . Please contact District Delegate Pauline Beet on 5988 3440 for more information. CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES OPEN Entries open on Monday July 26th for the 2011 MPDWG Championships. These will be contested in three grades: handicaps 0-18, 19-29 and 30 to 45. All contestants will play an 18 hole stroke round at The National GC on Thursday September 22nd after which the top 8 qualifiers in each grade will begin matchplay rounds at Moonah Links with the finals at Sorrento. The Conditions of Play and Entry Form are available. SORRENTO PLATE Thursday July 7th 2011 A big thank you to all the ladies who braved the cold and blustery conditions to take part in the Sorrento Plate. It really wasn't as bad as we all thought it would be and most of us stayed reasonably dry. The winners were Sally Newman-Morris and Barbara Price (Mornington) with 45 points Runners up were Sue Evans and Veronica Leggatt also from Mornington with 43 points.
Juniors who played Emily Opie from Portsea and Rebecca Stephens from the Dunes. HANDICAP MATCHPLAY FINAL RESULTS After leading all season, The National took out top spot for Blue Division. Played at Mornington in chilly and sometimes sunny conditions, all groups managed to finish before the rain rolled in over the bay. MPDWG representative, Pauline Beet, presented The National team with their Pennant and badges. Well done and congratulations to all teams who competed in the event. Without your support there would not be such a worthwhile competition. Congratulations to Berwick Montuna, winners of the Green Division of the Handicap matchplay competition, played in beautiful conditions for a change, at Portsea on Friday 24th. The Veterans Championship was held at Mornington Golf Club on Thursday 19th May. Cold, blustery conditions greeted the players and it was hard to drag ourselves away from the tea and coffee station to brave the wind. A total of 42 players supported this annual event. Mornington was well represented with 20 ladies taking part - not surprisingly, Mornington scooped the prize pool. Probably the largest gathering of golfers on the Peninsula this year was at Rosebud Country Club on Thursday May 12th when 194 players from MPDWG clubs and beyond competed in the annual Golden Putter day. See the CLUB NEWS page for a photo of the winners. VALE - GLORIA GILLIES Gloria Gillies, a long- standing member of Cerberus Golf Club, .died on Saturday May 1st 2011. An active participant in district events, she was vice-president of the MPDWG in 2001-2002, and president in 2003-4. We send our condolences to her family and to her friends at Cerberus and at other clubs. DISTRICT MEMBERS IN NEW ROLES The Tournament Co-ordinator for the new Golf Victoria is BIVIANA GILSON, a member of The National GC's recent winning pennant teams, a member of MPDWG's Country Team in 2006-10 and the winner with Kerry Duddy of the MPDWG Foursomes Championship in 2008. Also playing an important part in the new organisatioin is ANNE FELGATE, formerly District Delegate and Match Committee chair of MPDWG. Anne was Treasurer of WGV and is now a member of the Interim Board of Management. of Golf Victoria We wish Biviana and Anne well in their new positions.

When Helen moved to the Peninsula she told her family she would not go on any more committees. But as well as being actively involved in her club Carrington Park, she joined the MPDG A match committee in 2001, and since then she has held the positions of vice-president, president and for the last three years, district delegate. In all these roles she has contributed generously of her time and enthusiasm. She and her partner Ray are moving this week to Barooga on the Murray. She is pictured above with a photo collage presented to her by Lorraine Leudar at a farewell dinner arranged by the MPDWG committee. We all wish her good health and happiness in her new home. Pauline Beet has been appointed to fill the position of District Delegate, and Val Peppler is now chair of the the Match Committee. PENNANT SEASON BEGINS Competitions began this week in Divisions 1 and 2. See the PENNANT page for results and leaderboards. Division 1 played at The National, and Carrington Park hosted Division 2, Next week, Division 1 plays at Cardinia Beaconhills on Friday 18th, and Division 2 will be at Devilbend on Thursday 17th Division 3 which has a smaller number of teams will start on Friday 25th March. Draws for all Divisions are on the PENNANT page, and the results of each round will be published as soon as they become available. The leaderboards will show the state of the competition in each Division. BEACON PLATE 2011 The first MPDWG event for 2011 was the Beacon Plate on February 24th. Congratulations to Mornington Golf Club for providing not only a beautiful course, a tasty lunch and perfect weather but also, for the second consecutive year, both the the winners and the runners-up. Kay Van Der Net and Jean Rowe won with an excellent score of 47 points, from Lea Stass and Sandra Pimlott with 45 points.
