HIGHLIGHTS OF 2010 Last updated: January 17, 2011 DISTRICT SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP Monday December 20th at Rosebud Country Club Three brave girls survived wind and rain to compete in the Schools Championship. Rebecca Stephens from The Dunes was the winner of the girls' competition, and James Harrington from Moonah Links won the boys' event. Congratulations to them both and to all the other competitors.

This is an annual event arranged for former office-bearers of district clubs. Trish Wech and Sue Evans from Mornngton along with committee members from Portsea were organisers this year. Portsea Captain Sue Dunball welcomed players from 11 clubs as well as several non-players who enjoyed Portsea's hospitality and an excellent lunch. Mornington won nearly everything - individual winners were Jean and Kay from the winning teams both with 39 points. Rhonda Harrison (The Dunes) and Pauline Beet (Rosebud) won NTP awards. The event will be held next year at Rosebud on Monday December 5th WHAT A YEAR FOR SUE!! Sue Wooster from Moonah Links has had an amazing year. She was the winner of the NSW Championship in May (click SUE), she is a member of the Victorian State Team which was the joint winner of the Interstate Team Matches, she played at number 1 for the MPDWG Country Team, and now she has won Golf Australia's Women's Mid Amateur Championship. This event was played at The National from November 9 to 11. It is for women aged bwetween 30 and 55 years, with handicaps of less than 18.4. Sue had a winning score of 228 for the three rounds.
In a quite differenct experience, Sue and her husband and son were aboard the QANTAS A380 that made such a spectacular exit from and quick return to Singapore early in November.
GRANDMOTHER OF THE YEAR! Congratulations to our secretary Sue whose granddaughter Millie Louise was born on November 9th. DISTRICT MIXED FOURSOMES SUNDAY OCTOBER 24TH 2010 ROSEBUD COUNTRY CLUB On a beautiful Peninsula day, the Mixed Foursomes Championship organised by the PDGA was won by Pam Fisher and Matt Beaton of Rosebud, with a score of 80. Runners-up with 83 were Carol Scarff and Troy Smith from Devilbend. Nett winners were Susan Dawson and Glen Dignam from Devilend, with a 70 nett, on a countback from Debra and Kevin Cairns of Flinders.
HISCOCK SALVER Devilbend Golf Club, Friday October 15th 2010 What a disappointing day for our final event for the year. Because of constant rain and predicted high winds, several clubs withdrew and the competition was shortened to 9 holes. But despite the conditions some good scores were achieved. The winning team was from Mornington, pictured below.

(from left: Kay, Noel, Norma and Robyn) The MPDWG is very grateful to Devilbend for coping with a difficult day so efficiently. President Lesley, Captain Di, Catering Manager Vanessa and other staff members all made us feel very welcome and provided an excellent lunch. Thank you to them all, and well done to the winners and all players. Just to be there deserved congratulations. CLINIC AT THE NATIONAL Thank you to Craig Funch, Director of Golf, and Greg McConnell, Teaching Professional, and to all The National staff for the excellent clinic conducted on Thursday October 14th. MPDWG members were able to practise the skills of putting, chipping, pitching and their full swing. They were unanimous in their appreciation of the day and look forward to improved performances on the course. Thank you to MPDWG committee members Val Peppler and Sandy Johnson for making the arrangements. We will hope to arrange further clinics in 2011.
MPDWG CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 The Championships concluded with three rounds of matchplay, at The National and The Dunes on Thursday September 30th and Friday October 1st. Thank you to all the hosting clubs - we are very grateful for your generosity.
In A grade, Sue Semmens won from Mary Ann Elson of The Dunes. B grade saw Melinda Crawford defeat last year's winner Lorraine Leudar (Carrington Park) and Ann Dumsa won C grade from Vicki Lucas of Flinders. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all participants. Click RESULTS In the early rounds, A Grade winners on the first day of the Championships, played at Rosebud on Thursday 23rd September were Sue Semmens from Moonah Links (gross) and Leola Taylor (Rosebud - handicap). After the second round On Friday 24th A grade gross winners were Sue Semmens and Mary Ann Elson (The Dunes), with Leola Taylor and Carol Scarff (Devilbend) winning the handicap prizes.
Loi Magill from The Dunes won B grade (gross) with Bev Marshall from Devilbend runner-up, while Melinda Crawford (Berwick Montuna) and Sue Barlow (The Dunes) had the best handicap scores. The C grade gross winner was Vicki Lucas from Flinders with Anne Dumsa (Mount Martha) runner-up. Milica Cole (Safety Beach) and Lorna Conboy (Flinders) were the handicap winner and runner-up.

RWH DISTRICT FINAL Monday August 16th Despite rain, wind and hail, thirteen valiant 4BBB teams from our district clubs finished the course at Cape Schanck. Prizes were presented by Sarah White, Communications Manager for the Royal Women's Hospital, who thanked all our members who had participated in the event, which raises funds for the hospital. Sarah White, Wendy Barnes, Barbara Richards, District Delegate Helen Hall The winners with 42 points were the Cape Schanck representatives, Wendy Barnes and Barbara Richards. Runners-up were Sheree Wetton and Helen Danson from Safety Beach with 41 points, on a count-back from the Flinders team Debra Cairns and Vicki Lucas. RULES SEMINAR CARRINGTON PARK GOLF CLUB
A room full of members from most of our clubs was at Carrington Park on July 23rd to hear Kevin Jacques, Chairman of the VGA Rules and Handicapping Committee, present the VGA and Golf Australia Club Level Rules Seminar. There were lots of questions and discussion, and we all improved our familiarity with the Rules Of Golf. GOLF CLINIC @ THE NATIONAL Thursday July 15th

A field of 42 pairs played the challenging Eagle Ridge course in very pleasant weather. Congratulations to the winners, Gill Lawrence and Lorraine Theophanis from Mornington CGC and to the runners-up Carol Scarffe and Leanne Gwyther from Devilbend. BEACON PLATE 2010
The winners of the first MPDWG event for the year were Jan Vogel and Nancy Hughes from Mornington GC, with 44 points (pictured above, centre). Greta de Hoogd and Kim Pitcher (Cardinia Beaconhills) were runners-up, on a count-back from Janet Hedges and Robyn Moore from The Dunes, with 43 points. Thank you to the Portsea GC members and staff for their hospitality, and to all competitors. COURSE RATING AND HANDICAPPING CHANGES A large meeting of more than 60 members on February 8th heard Louise MacDonald, the Director of Golf at Women's Golf Victoria, talk about the changes to the handicapping and course rating systems being introduced by Golf Australia this year. The important date to note is FRIDAY 9TH APRIL when the First Package of the proposed changes will come into effect - the change in the method of calculating handicaps. POINT NEPEAN TROPHY 2010 This annual event at Sorrento and Portsea Golf clubs was played on January 21st and 22nd. The winner of the 36-hole Point Nepean Trophy was Lee Park, after a playoff with Sue Wooster. Sue won the AS Patterson Cup, also after a playoff, from Montana Strauss, and Lee Park won the Cheviot Plate. See Results and a full report on the MEMBER CLUB NEWS page
