The District Committee of the MPDWG is very pleased to announce that the Junior Championships, comprising an Open Championship for girls under 18 who have an Australian Handicap, and a District Championship for girls who are members of one of our affiliated clubs will be played at The National Golf Club on Thursday September 30th.  Entries will open on July 26th.  Click Conditions of Play for details.

KAY MAHLOOK SHIELD 2010
Our team in the Kay Mahlook Shield played in the Bendigo District on March 29th - 31st was Rebecca Stephens, Alex White and Kirsten Horne.  Thank you the team manager, our Junior Co-ordinator Barb Sargent.

DISTRICT SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009

Congratulations to the winners of the Schools Championships 2009.

Andrew Schonewille from Rosebud won the Schoolboys title after a two-hole playoff against Ben Rogers  from Sorrento, both having scored brilliant 68s, 4 under par.

Kirsty Horne from The Dunes was the inaugural winner of the Schoolgirls trophy.

The MPDWG is grateful to the PDGA for running this event and we hope that it continues well into the future so we can have lots of names to put on our new trophy.

THE GATEHOUSE AWARD TO ANGELA DUNN

Iin 1972, members of the Gatehouse Family made a donation to the then ALGU to create a Fund for the encouragement of junior golfers in Australia, in memory of Mrs J Austin Gatehouse, who, during her lifetime, was a prominent golfer and administrator at State and National level. Mrs Gatehouse won three Australian Amateur Championships, five Victorian Amateur Championships, and was the Victorian Ladies’ Golf Union President from 1929-1935 and then again in 1943 and in 1946.

“The Gatehouse Award is to be presented to a female junior amateur who shows outstanding ability and potential as a golfer, and who possesses leadership qualities which will foster and improve these attributes.”

The 2009 recipient is our MPDWG member Angela Dunn, who will be presented with the Award at Kooringal GC on Tuesday September 29th.  The citation reads:

"Angela is very committed to her golf and takes responsibility for organising the tournaments she will be competing in. She started playing golf as a beginner when she was 14 and her handicap dropped dramatically. Angela’s success has been from her own motivation and from her very self driven personality.  Angela is a member of the Mornington Peninsula District and has played in many Kay Mahlook Shields and has taken younger members “under her wing” to encourage them.

Angela is a very easy going and friendly person who gets along with people of all ages. She works at the golf club and possesses great leadership skills and is always willing to help others. Angela has been a member of the WGV border team and junior state squad and regularly participates in WGV tournaments and camps. She will be completing VCE this year in 2009."

The Committee of the MPDWG congratulates Angela and wishes her well for a great future.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Committee of the MPDWG regrets to announce that the Junior Championship has been cancelled.  There were not enough entrants to make it a viable competition.  We thank the Safety Beach Golf Club for its willingness to host the event, and hope that next year there will be more junior golfers in our clubs, and therefore more contestants able to enter in our Championships.

CONGRATULATIONS REBECCA

Rebecca Stephens from The Dunes had a great two weeks at the Stewart Appleby Foundation camp at Corowa and at Lang Lang. Thirteen-year- old Rebecca has held a handicap for less than a year and is now playing off 24.

We hope that before too long she will be following in the  steps of her team-mate in the Kay Mahlook Shield and the Angelsea Camp, Angela Dunn, who this week played number two or number one in the MPDWG Country Team, having a sensational win over former Country Champion Judy Langford of North Eastern.

ANGLESEA CAMP 2009

MS CHENEY'S QUILT

The quilt shown here with Burtta Cheney and our two juniors, Alex White and Tilly Poulsen, was made by the girls who attended the Anglesea Camp.  It was a "wet weather" activity and its construction provided a lot of fun, and a few new skills for some of the girls.

The Burtta Cheney Anglesea Camp was held from 30th June to 3rd July in fairly average weather conditions! However that did not deter our five junior girls who attended. Angela Dunn (Flinders) Loren Dennett (Safety Beach) Melissa Hui (Sorrento) Alex White and Rebecca Stephens (The Dunes).

The Kangaroo Trophy was held  on the first day  amidst wild winds and rain  with 42 entrants

The overall nett winner was Alex White who had 68 off a handicap of 33 - Alex is 13 years old.The C Grade nett was won by Rebecca  Stephens who had 74 off a handicap of 28 - Bec is 12 years old.The Kangaroo Trophy was won by Tilly Poulsen on a count back with 81 gross off a handicap of 3 - Tilly is a member at Mornington but her home club is now Kingston Heath. Congratulations to all.

The camp was a huge success although it was difficult to get outside at times, due to the weather, but all the participants seemed to have a great time, made lots of new friends and some are already looking forward to next year. Well done to all.

Angela and Loren will both  celebrate their 18th birthdays this month and will no longer be able to play as juniors, but congratulations to them both and we wish them "Happy Golfing". Many thanks for representing  the Mornington Peninsula over the last few years.

Rebecca Stephens from The Dunes

ENTRANTS IN OUR JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
2008 MPDWG JUNIOR GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP and OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

It was a beautiful day at Rosebud for our Championship entrants. In the first group to hit off were Breanna Elliott from Yarrawonga, handicap 2, Jacinta Brideson from Southern (3), and last year's winner Tilly Poulsen (3).

The field included Audrey Teo from Beaconhills, the youngest competitor aged 9 (10 next week!) and Rebecca Stephens from The Dunes aged 11, who gained her handicap of 40 only last week.

Breanna won the Open Championship with a par round of 73, and Tilly won the District title with a 77.  Both nett events were won by our newest golfer Rebecca, whose nett 68 was too good for Breanna's 71, 72 from Angela Dunn of Flinders and Lisa Teo from Beaconhills, Melissa Hui (Sorrento) with 73, and Tilly and Tamika Fasoli (Sorrento) with 74.

Encouragement awards were given to Kirsten Horne from The Dunes, playing in her first tournament, and to nine-year-old Audrey.  We were intending to give one to Rebecca too, on the occasion of her first tournament, but she won two trophies so we thought that would be encouragement enough!

The quality of the golf, the way the girls coped with the pressures of a tournament, and their understanding of the rules and etiquette of golf, were outstanding.  Congratulations to them, to their parents and to their clubs.
